So, what else can I apply Crisco to that would rise one inch higher...

I have had good fruitcake only once in my life. I can barely remember it now, but I know it was good. Alas, one good fruitcake experience is probably what most people are allotted to them in their lifetime.

I love how it says, "It's digestible."

Gingies. They remind me of Gingy from the Shrek movies.

Easy Date Bars and Noel Nut Balls [INSERT TASTELESS JOKE HERE]

"Aboot"? She dresses Scottish, but she's speaking Canadian!

Santa and the chef should lay off that fruitcake a bit. That's a heck of a lotta belly fat!

Canadians don't say "aboot".

It's how Americans think Canadians say it. ;)

True, to Americans' ears it sounds like "aboot". The other way, to Canadians' ears it sounds like Americans are saying "Abaht".

I guess accents are a spectrum. From the point of view of blue, purple seems reddish and to the point of view of red, purple seems blueish.

It always sounds more like "a boat" to my ears, when my Ontario buds use it.

Cool! I love talking about diphthongs and alveolar flaps. No, really, I do. I took a linguistics class in college and LOVED IT! Sometimes wish I had majored in that so I could be underemployed in that field instead.

Notice the "cannily priced for real thrift" to go along with the Scottish theme in that fruitcake ad...I've been collecting ads that use the Scottish = thrifty or cheap stereotype. I don't have enough for a roundup yet, but I hope to do one eventually.

Somebody just posted a Scotty dog with that theme!

Nope, I hadn't seen those. I've run across several in reading less than six months of LIFE, though, so I don't doubt there are plenty more!

That sort of thing in the ad is exactly why fruitcakes got a bad name. Having grown up with the homemade stuff, my family actually enjoys a good fruitcake.

I just shipped off two homemade, customized fruitcakes to family in Arizona. They love it, and I make it for them because the enjoy it so.
They have specific taste; their requirements in a fruitcake include light, not dark (no cloves), extra pineapple, pecans, (plus a few macadamias) not walnuts, and brandy, not rum or whisky (I always use real French brandies, and cure them for four weeks). Can't buy one that precise in the store!

I actually had a slice of fruitcake once that was incredibly delicious. My girlfriend at the time explained that it did not contain citron, which seems to be the ingredient that makes most fruitcake taste so nasty. It makes sense: I love fruit, I love cake, and I love good booze, so a combination of those things ought to be pretty good, right?

There's a conspiracy, I just know it. Somewhere, there is a group of people hoarding all the GOOD fruitcakes for themselves, and foisting the nasty ones on the general public to make them think that's all that fruitcake can ever be!
