It is a nice jacket. It probably looked better in real life. I'm not sure what the deal is with the color. I'm not sure if it's faded, a poor scan, or poor print quality, but for a moment I wondered whether Aaron might have vitiligo on his hand, but I couldn't find any evidence that he does or did. I think it's just the image quality.
I read some where that many of the celebrities used in these advertizements in the 40s and 50s never even used the products, they just posed for the picture and got a pay check. Thankfully now if a person endorses a product (according to advertizing laws enacted in the 70s) has to have used the product or uses the product
The product behind that legislation was a brand of pantyhose endorsed by football player Joe Namath in the early 70's. At that point, a few lawmakers spoke up and said, "LOL, no."
I think Aaron actually smoked. There was a picture of him in Sports Illustrated when he was ready to break Babe Ruth's record, and I could swear he had a cigarette in one hand. Then there was Dick Allen... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/cover/featured/8284/index.htm
There was no social stigma to it so almost everyone did. It really wasn't a big deal. About the only people who didn't, it was because of religious reasons, allergies, or they just didn't enjoy it. People knew it was unhealthy, but, meh.
