I am so making up for not posting anything for ages by posting a ton now. Also, I am apparently drawn to bathroom-related things. It explains so much.

So behold - toilet paper!

I'd like to see that list of "15 painful diseases caused or aggravated by toilet paper". \:-S

So generic toilet paper causes "15 painful diseases"?

The visiting friend in the first ad kinda looks like she's saying "Oh, c'mon, are you kidding me?"

Oh, and the idea of coloured toilet paper is sooo ridiculous. Pink for landssake!

It's weird because while I haven't thought of this in a long time, I remember as a kid colored toilet paper. My aunt especially use to, still does, color match EVERYTHING in individual rooms and her bathroom was like a giant pink ball right down to the toilet seat, seat cover and toilet paper. I'm not sure when they stopped making it but I remember it in the 80s lol

I think the 80s was about the end of it. It was deemed environmentally unsound.

They have it now and then in the stores here in Sweden.

A search on google gave some companies in the US that sells it.

http://www.renovashop.com/ ('the sexiest paper on Earth' according to themselves)

Or what about some toiletpaper that glows in the dark? This is a UK company:

Clearly, safety is apparently still something people are concerned about, regarding toilet paper, because clicking on 'safety' on the Renova page gave this (I especially like the dermatological and gynecological compliance tests on live subjects):

Renova paper products and industrial processes are environmentally certified (ISO 14001), of assured quality (ISO 9001:2000), with safe and hygienic industrial processes (OHSAS 18001).

All additives used are compliant with the European Directive 2002/61/EC (19th July) and the tissue paper used in Renova products is entirely made of virgin pulp, either ECF or TCF (Elementary Chlorine Free or Totally Chlorine Free).

Renova products have been thoroughly tested:

EN 648 fastness of fluorescent whitened agents
EN 646 determination of color fastness
EN 645 cold water extract evaluation
EN 1541 determination of formaldehyde in aqueous extract
BfR 4322 determination of Glyoxal in aqueous extract
EN ISO 15320 - PCP analysis
EN 12498 Cadmium, Chromium and Lead analysis on the water extract
EN 12497 Mercury analysis on the water extract
EN 1104 Diffusion of antimicrobial constituents
EN 1230-1 Sensory evaluation as to Odour
EN 1230-2 Sensory evaluation as to Flavour

Renova toilet papers were also tested as to:

Dermatological compliance on live subjects
Gynaecological compliance on live subjects

My grandma's downstairs bathroom was the same way!! Not flowery, but pink everything, right down to the toilet paper! Now that I think about it, my mom used to buy blue toilet paper to match the color scheme in all of our bathrooms, too. I remember it being around well into the mid-90s, at least in the Midwest.

Man, they make the shame of hemorrhoids almost more palpable than the pain. Sheesh. Northern tissue would be from the Koch family. Daddy founded the reactionary and racist John Birch Society, his sons are the billionaires behind the creation of the 'grassroots' tea party movement. Personally, I'd prefer to use the brothers to the tissue.

Just how harsh was this harsh toilet paper? Sounds like it was sandpaper!

I buy Scott Tissue today and my housemates complain that it's harsh (they want quilted and 3-ply and who knows what). If Scott was the "gentle" tissue then, I wonder how bad the cheap stuff was?

For many it was a great improvement over the corn cobs and pages from Sears Roebuck catalogs that they had been using not that long before these ads. For real. Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite technology is, I invariably say plumbing. It may not be glamorous, but it is a wonderful thing to take for granted.

Good Lord! What was TP made of back then!? And why didn't those housewives use something else if it was tearing up their nether regions!? O_o

I totally forgot about the colored TP fad. I'm guessing people stopped buying it once they realized that having all those dyes rubbing sensitive areas was probably a bad idea.

I remember my childhood friend's mother having coloured toilet paper. In their "pink bathroom" it was pink, and if I remember correctly, in their "blue bathroom" (I rarely went there, as it wasn't the "guest bathroom") it was blue. Their mother was — and probably still is — rather eccentric in a way. I haven't met her after a divorce happened.

Oh, and this was Finland & 90's to early 2000's. Not so long ago.
