Funny how the women are stark naked and they guys haven't even taken their hats off, I presume to offer a defense for the charges of pornography he knew were sure to come. This one is always cited as one of the outrage causing efforts of the Impressionists. L'Origine du Monde probably took the cake, I'm sure many still see it as obscene. And yet the title is completely true, it's OUR birthplace. Funny what causes people to get upset, what is supposed to be secret and why.
It was actually a commentary on what was considered acceptable in the art world. Nudes in mythological Greek/Roman scenes = totally fine. Contemporary nudes = Nooooooo! You could have a well-known model or prostitute pose as a figure out of legend, but you couldn't present her as herself.
