My grandparents' condo in Pompano Beach had a fixture in their bathroom on the ceiling with two of those heat lamps in it.
On a cold day it was absolute BLISS to turn those on and just bake in it for a few minutes. I think it was a fairly standard thing in buildings built in that era because all the condos, hotels, etc. in that area have them. The lamps are even on a timer so you don't forget to turn them off and waste a ton of electricity (or even start a fire; they put out a LOT of heat!)
I should install something like that at home. I wonder if they're even still allowed by code? :)
A lot of hotels still have those. The place I stayed in Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago had that with the timer and everything. I have also wondered about the possibility of getting one of those installed at home, but never followed up on the idea. A licensed electrician should know whether they're legal or maybe county code enforcement. My bathroom is always cold so I use a space heater.
Oh, and part of the problem in my bathroom is the ridiculously high ceilings so I'm not sure if one of those lamps would even work because the heat source would be so far up and the heat would just stay up there.
The house I grew up in had a heat lamp in the bathroom that took 2 of those reddish orange colored heat bulbs. It was fabulous in the winter. Made my hot showers even warmer and steamier. I loved that thing! So much so that I cried for two weeks when the wiring on it went to hell and my biomom refused to fix it. One of my life goals is to one day have a heat lamp in my bathroom again. :-)
I *think my parents' house has some kind of heating light in the bathroom, but definitely not like these. My aunt had the heat light in her condo (in Boston) and I'd always turn it on mostly because the concept of multiple light switches was so foreign to me. I remember being more taken with the color of light rather than the heat.
We have a heat lamp in our house in the main bathroom. I love having a warm, warm bathroom before taking a shower in the middle of winter. My husband and I are lizards, we must have the heat lamp on. ;)
