Re: Your wife's makeup. I hope you are kidding. But I do have more than a few vintage marriage/relationship books that advise the woman to set her alarm early so she can get up early, put on her makeup and then slip back into bed so her husband wouldn't have "the mystery" spoiled for him.

I always wondered how the husband would sleep through the alarm.

In my fantasy life, my bedside table is that spare and lovely. I rise easily, turning off a gently tinkling alarm with a graceful move of my wrist.

In my real life: there are twenty books, precariously balanced, three different alarm clocks, and every morning I knock half of that off, as well as my glasses, trying to turn off the alarms.
