Norda International, 1970s

The text on this is (despite the horrid grammar) just priceless, especially the last line:

So, if the past can taste good, and the present tastes great, together we can make tomorrow delicious.

If that AD was from today, you would say "Well someone used Google Translator."

But no.

Maybe this is just my work in the food business talking, but it makes perfect sense to me - it's a trade ad aimed at food manufacturers by a flavor manufacturer. Flavor chemistry (http://www.bls.gov/opub/ooq/2004/winter/yawhat.htm) is one of the most interesting parts of the food biz, though it's not one I particularly care to support!

Anyway, this ad reminds me of a story: I was on a flight headed to a focus group for work, and just by happenstance, the guy next to me was also in the food biz. While I was in produce, working for a marketing order (like Got Milk? but for fruit, and with a way smaller budget) he was an executive for a particular fast-food chain. So we got to talking about work stuff. He spent a long time telling me about this new small sandwich they were developing, and how they were using extra fiber ingredients in it to make it really filling, and it was going to be a big hit for them, because they were going to sell it cheap and people were going to try it and really like it because it filled them up.

And I thought to myself, "There is a very good reason I'm not in that part of the food business. This guy is a true believer."

The sandwich, by the way, was the KFC Snacker.

Ahhhhh…the artificial flavour of manufactured, capitalist inspired idealism!

Oh, sure, it looks like a harmless lollipop, but it's probably traveling around 17,000 mph. If the ISS hits that thing, it will punch a huge hole in it and everyone aboard will die as a result of explosive decompression. How does the future taste now, Norda?

Are we supposed to be giant tongues nowadays, experiencing the world solely through the sense of taste?

Dear World of Yesterday:

To answer your question: it's gonna be caked in bacon and cheese.

Sincerely,
