Here's the Tom Baker (4th Doctor) and Lala Ward (Romana II) commercials for Prime Computer.

Ooooh, Steve Jobs eat your heart out.

And two bonus WHO ads.

I want one!

And Colin Baker as Doctor #6. If ever there was a beef-flavored Doctor it would be 6. (I tease because I love.)

Lala Ward and Tom Baker soon got divorced. she's now married to Richard Dawkins.

I love how incredibly dates these are for someone who lives outside of time!

How much is 24/11?!

Two quarks to a spittle, carry the two... Pre-decimalization money makes me feel dumb.

(Is that... 24 and a little over a half pounds? 11 shillings, 20 shillings to the pound?)

24 shillings 11 pence, I think? (Or, 1 pound and just short of 5 shillings.)

I bet! Also now I'm mock-arguing over IM with someone that these commercials mean that The Doctor and Romana were married in canon.

Wow... COBOL, FORTRAN, RPGII, BASIC, Assembler, FORTRAN 77 and PL/I over 2780, HASP, UT200, UNIVAC 1004 and ICL 7020. That's like a job description from the Seventies. I miss the old days (especially seeing Lalla Ward every week. I forgot how pretty she was, and probably still is.)

There's really nothing similar between the series that ended in 1989 and the new one. The characters are the same, the same kinds of things happen, but the charm of the old series was the way that the characters interacted, I think because they didn't have the technical capability they have now.

Exactly. The earlier shows had to rely on better interaction between the Doctor, his companions, and the other characters (both protagonist and antagonist), because the effects were simpler and thus not as impressive.

The company I worked for during that time frame used Prime computers exclusively. It was a little venture started by Tom Golisano called Paychex.

Those are amazing. Why didn't David and Billie do adverts? I do love Four and Romana II.

Apparently, everyone wants the Doctor... and a Prime computer. ;)

Woo!

I'm going as Four for Halloween. I tried to talk my boyfriend into dressing up as Four, but he said he would only if I was Leela. No, dude. No. First of all, I'd freeze my ass off, and secondly, I don't want to make that costume, and thirdly, she was my least favorite of his companions. (My favorite is a tie between Sarah and Romana one.) I think he was kidding anyway--he never does costumes for Halloween. HMPH.

So I'm going as Four. I knit the scarf over the summer (thirteen feet including the fringe), and I bought a replica of his sonic screwdriver (oh, the irony: to put in the batteries for the sound effect, I had to have....a regular screwdriver) and I'm going to attempt to curl my hair and I'm borrowing a hat....and, best of all, I'm going to a geeky party, so everyone will recognize the costume.

I'm going to spend all night going "Hello-oh. Would you like a jelly baby?"
