The ad is a repost, but one of my personal faves. Anyone who lived in DFW area in the '70s will remember this team:

Channel 8 news TM Oct 1977

The weatherman's signature look was the bow tie, which he wore until he retired from this station a few years ago. His pants weren't always that tight, though.

Iola Johnson was the first African-American anchor in that market. Here's a nice promo for her:

WFAA also became famous for its breaking local coverage of the JFK assassination in 1963:

News director Jay Watson literally ran from Dealey Plaza back to the TV station after witnessing the assassination, which is why he's out of breath in the clip.

yeah..except..no.

Who was famous for breaking the story was Sam Pate, of KBOX AM radio, who was covering the motorcade live when the shooting happened. TV was not covering the event, as live remote mobile broadcasting had not yet been invented.

Technically, the first recorded audio of the shooting was the Dallas Police Chief Curry getting on the 'tac 2' radio frequency and dispatched men to find out 'who fired shots up yonder on that grass hill'.

Pate, who was the only newsman in Dallas at the time that monitored tac 2, heard the report and then saw the motorcade speed by headed to Parkland with secret service men on the hood and sub machine guns are the ready (Pate was on I-35 northbound, facing south on the side of the road when the motorcade sped by). He immediately radioed in a bulletin and was ON IT.

Besides the clip above, there was no TV news, nor radio news other than KBOX for at least 30 minutes after the shooting. KBOX went 'global' the rest of the day and next, as the world got their information on this tragedy from Pate, then others on the KBOX news team (who had sobered up by that time LOL).

Disclaimer: Pate is a relative and I've produced a documentary on him. I was there (age 8) and I remember this all very well.

I used to live in southern Oklahoma where we would watch the Dallas affiliates. I totally remember the bow tie wearing weatherman. Now it's driving me crazy that I can't remember his name!

Man, this was a little slice of my childhood. I was born in Dallas in 1979 and Troy and Tracy were working through my 80's childhood (I feel like Troy Dungan moved to KXAS 5 at some point? Did I hallucinate this?)

In related news, there's whole youtube channels of promo reels and intros. It's like my own private childhood time travel wormhole...

Apparently the summer of 1979 was no picnic, either, according to my mother. I showed up on August 31st, which means she spent the entirety of it HUGE and MISERABLE.

Now THIS is a news team!

Verne on sports: for years 'the voice of the Dallas Cowboys'

Troy The Bowtie Dungan: we used to play a drinking game and had to take a shot every time he crinkled his nose in a cute bunny rabbit way.

Iola: hot HOT HOT

Tracy: hard drinking, hard driving, and always on time with the news.

These people were Gods in their day. Top Celebs in a town build on celebrity.

Oh I remember BFD. Came on 8 right after Dark Shadows on Channel 5.

Iola is the Uhura of TV anchors.

I like that ad. It's 70s cool without being 70s cheesy (if that made any sense).

She was a beautiful woman.

I'm glad that made sense. I had so much on my mind, I had trouble typing out my thoughts. o_O

*nods* And the weatherman is wearing the trademark extra-tight 70s pants.
