Local Station ad and promo
Oct. 14th, 2012 08:10 pmThe ad is a repost, but one of my personal faves. Anyone who lived in DFW area in the '70s will remember this team:

The weatherman's signature look was the bow tie, which he wore until he retired from this station a few years ago. His pants weren't always that tight, though.
Iola Johnson was the first African-American anchor in that market. Here's a nice promo for her:

Date: 2012-10-15 01:31 am (UTC)News director Jay Watson literally ran from Dealey Plaza back to the TV station after witnessing the assassination, which is why he's out of breath in the clip.

Date: 2012-10-15 11:56 am (UTC)Who was famous for breaking the story was Sam Pate, of KBOX AM radio, who was covering the motorcade live when the shooting happened. TV was not covering the event, as live remote mobile broadcasting had not yet been invented.
Technically, the first recorded audio of the shooting was the Dallas Police Chief Curry getting on the 'tac 2' radio frequency and dispatched men to find out 'who fired shots up yonder on that grass hill'.
Pate, who was the only newsman in Dallas at the time that monitored tac 2, heard the report and then saw the motorcade speed by headed to Parkland with secret service men on the hood and sub machine guns are the ready (Pate was on I-35 northbound, facing south on the side of the road when the motorcade sped by). He immediately radioed in a bulletin and was ON IT.
Besides the clip above, there was no TV news, nor radio news other than KBOX for at least 30 minutes after the shooting. KBOX went 'global' the rest of the day and next, as the world got their information on this tragedy from Pate, then others on the KBOX news team (who had sobered up by that time LOL).
Disclaimer: Pate is a relative and I've produced a documentary on him. I was there (age 8) and I remember this all very well.

Date: 2012-10-15 01:19 pm (UTC)I think it was partly because of the JFK assassination that news affiliates in DFW realized they needed to step it up a notch. At that moment, the whole world was watching and they were scrambling to have something to show them. You don't want something like that happening in your own front yard, but when it does, you don't want to look like idiots when dealing with it.

Date: 2012-10-15 11:26 am (UTC)The others are Tracy Rowlett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Rowlett), who went on to anchor at another Dallas station in the 1990s and Verne Lundquist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verne_Lundquist) who became a sports announcer for CBS. What's weird is that all of these guys go by their middle names. The odd one out is Iola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iola_Johnson), whose middle name is Vivian. Pretty name, either way.
I remember that Tracy has a son with autism and years ago he did a special about his son and autism in general, which was not as big of a topic as it is today. People really didn't know much about it then. The story stuck with me and perhaps for good reason because now I have a son with autism and I was able to recognize the symptoms right away.

Date: 2012-10-15 03:31 pm (UTC)Note the mention of the record highs at 1:32. You were too young to remember the summer of 1980, but I do. It was BRUTAL! It was because of the Mt. St. Helen eruption earlier in the year.

Troy The Bowtie Dungan: we used to play a drinking game and had to take a shot every time he crinkled his nose in a cute bunny rabbit way.
Iola: hot HOT HOT
Tracy: hard drinking, hard driving, and always on time with the news.
These people were Gods in their day. Top Celebs in a town build on celebrity.

Date: 2012-10-15 01:10 pm (UTC)Iola was indeed easy on the eyes, but she was more than a pretty face. She was very competent. Can't say the same for a lot of the eye candy I see covering the news and I don't just mean the women.
Verne Lundquist: sports broadcasting god. Yeah, yeah. My earliest memory of him was hosting Bowling for Dollars circa 1975! Yep, it was as cheesy as it sounds. :D
