Every dune buggy I have ever seen from that time, not that I've seen all that many, used a VW chassis and drivetrain. I didn't know they were made with other types of cars. I thought it had something to do with wanting to use an air-cooled engine.

VWs were the most popular, but they'd be built with anything that was available. For sand rails like this, a rear-engined chassis was favourite though. Some were water-cooled too - for muddy or grass-track running, getting the cooling radiator out of the mud is useful.

The Fiat here would be the Fiat 850 and the Renault the Renault 8 or Renault 10. In later years the Renault 20 or 30 front-wheel drive platforms were used by shifting the transaxle and engine, especially the V6, to the back.

Doesn't "Vaquero" mean "cowboy?"

That vehicle reminds me of Speed Buggy, a 70s cartoon character.
