What I don't understand is that it wouldn't spoil the design at all to put a railing around the bed. Real double-decker buses have railings!

My childhood bunk beds, designed and built by my dad the engineer that very year, were exactly that color finish. They're upstairs right now serving as single beds. They can also be trundled one under the other.

The over-engineering he did didn't extend to putting a rail around them, though. I only fell out of them once that I'm aware of, and it was when I was in high school. My father heard an unholy THUMP, came running down the hall, and found me, still asleep, climbing back into bed, so who knows how many times I actually did that!

My dad built a bunk bed (with a railing) and it even had a really badly working slide from the upper bunk. (Perhaps that was on purpose, because our downstair neighbours hated us already, well the loud noises we children made.)

Yes! Very cool and a great use of space. I've seen a lot of multi-tasker type bunks like this, but most are just boring and functional.
