1920 Cosmo Lifesavers

If only I could make head or tail of the copy!

I think he's saying he ate Life Savers so his mouth wouldn't be dry and he could sit there and talk to his date in the intermission. But I'm pretty confused about it myself.

I'm not sure I would enjoy licorice flavored lifesavers. Or clove ones, for that matter.

gosh, me too. I wish there were more flavours like this in candies nowadays.

That is to say, I completely misread what you wrote and I actually would love to try those flavours! Hee.

I would too! All those spicy candies look great. (Except licorice, you couldn't pay me to eat licorice.)

Ixnay on the licorice for me, but I'd love to try the clove flavor as well (when I get spice drops, the clove ones are my favorite). Wonder if they made your mouth numb?

Did they have cinnamon Life Savers in the '80s? I seem to vaguely remember them from when I was a kid, but that might have been a different candy. I probably wouldn't have liked those, if they were the kind of "red-hot candy" cinnamon flavor, which I've never been fond of.

The Big Drought - he's talking about Prohibition!

He's saying that before Prohibition, you'd have to get up and go to the bar to wet your whistle. She pokes fun at him over how 'thirsty' he must be .But wait! He's got Lifesavers and his beautiful girl to chat with and get close to in the dim, so everything is hunky-dory, actually.

You've got it. There's also the hint that he prefers to hang around with her (between the acts) and share a Life Saver or two and do some talking. He doesn't *have to* go get a drink.

Except for the weird bit of dialogue, the ad is very nice.

I'd love to try the clove kind, esp. if it tastes anything like Clove gum! I'm surprised they don't still make cinnamon.

Pretty ad, too.

the story:

Apparently John and Millie were an item. But Bob went to the show and saw Millie there. Where John abandoned Millie for a speakeasy down the block, Bob stayed, because he had the refreshing flavor of Life Savers! He shared them with Millie and they chatted during every break, getting to know one another... and now Millie is with Bob! Thanks, Life Savers!

And now, Groucho's endorsement.

I used to eat the peppermint Lifesavers all the time. But licorice, yuck.

My first thought was that he was guzzling booze at the break and covering up liquor breath with peppermint Life Savers.

I miss the flavors they used to have. Pez too.

I would love to have tried those clove Lifesavers! The Licorice doesn't sound too bad either; I can handle that a little at a time.
