Maybe because beer just isn't one of the things America is known for doing well?
This ad is really over the top though. "It's an American beer! Made in America! By Americans! Look at all these stars and stripes! You'd better drink it or you're un-American!"
Well, the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company stopped brewing Rainier in 1916, when prohibition hit Washington. There was also a lot of anti-German sentiment at that time, and beer was largely viewed as an immigrant beverage. Oddly enough, Rainier is now brewed by Miller, but a micro brewery has opened in the old Rainier Brewery, Emerald City Brewing. It is also the site of Tully's Coffee's headquarters and roasting plant. The giant "R" that topped the building replaced by a "T". The R is being restored by the Museum of History and Industry.
