I read shorpy.com on a regular basis, and there seems to be a regular contingent criticizing the appearance of the women...in that case, I don't think those guys are good at imagining what the women in the antique photos would look like with modern styling products, makeup, and dentistry. I don't think they're generally any worse looking; it's just that they had fewer mechanisms at their disposal to improve their appearance.
True, very true, but of course it's not just the women. people just seem to have this doughy, coarse look in these old pics. the grainy film, sepia or black and white doesn't help either.
my mom found an old letter (from the 20s) from some distant relative to my great-grandma, and she was talking about how she had come down with "the grippe"
