Does anyone else remember the "cooler chests" (in our family's case, it was metal with a diamond quilt embossed pattern on it) that sat on the front porch for the milkman to put milk in? Amazing that it did actually seem to keep the milk cool: I can't remember if my folks put ice or a freezer pack in it or not... (remember those little things that looked like mini plastic jugs of anti-freeze? remember remember remember?)

I remember! It tickles me that we used to get milk delivered by the milkman since that method of delivery vanished, though now there's a company around here (Hood's, I think) that does do that.

The freezer packs still exist. I've been sleeping with two of them since this summer has been so unbearably hot. There are still a few dairies that will in fact deliver by this method though it's certainly not the standard it once was.

"Look Mommy, how easy... only one hand!"

Are we sure that doesn't also belong on Vintage Ads After Dark?

I would like to know what is "Calypso" about Nestlé's Quik. Still, it sounds better than the one made with Maple-y Karo -- that drink is nearly one quarter corn syrup.

Oh I know. And how on earth do you stir peanut butter into (presumably chilled) milk? You could stir all day and it's not going to mix.

I don't think the Karo is going to dissolve any easier. Even with a blender, the whole thing sounds revolting.

That recipe actually sounds fairly tasty. But there is nothing in the one on this page that suggests a specific flavor of Quik. Maybe it's just me. I like things made with real bananas, but banana flavoring makes me gag.

Same here! I like real bananas, but I can't stand anything that is banana flavored. It doesn't even taste remotely like banana. Of course, the same could be said for other fruit flavorings, too, but I think banana is the worst.

I love canned milk. I am drinking evaporated milk in my coffee right now, but those "recipes" are complete shit. Lemon juice in milk? MMM...CURDLES ARE MY FAVORITE! Oh...and since when is buttermilk "refreshing"? What the fuck kind of science fiction world were these people living in?

I thought the "Refresh with Milk!" ad was going to talk about milk baths for a moment there.

Lemon juice in milk? Yuck! The only lemon I want in my milk is a lemon cookie.

The lemon would make the milk curdle like buttermilk. I have made a buttermilk substitute with milk and lemon juice and it's fine for most recipes, but I have never tried to drink it. Then again, some people like to drink buttermilk. I am not one of those people.

Neat, I didn't know you could use lemon juice + milk as a buttermilk substitute. You learn something new everyday. :)

I love dairy products and chocolate milk (and dunking cookies in milk), but I'm not fond of drinking plain milk. So, the thought of drinking buttermilk doesn't appeal to me, either.
