Didn't these things crash all over the place? Or was that the Comet 3? They literally shook apart.

The early Comet 1's had a few crashes. It was due to the new pressurization. There were cracks forming around the the large windows, and this caused them to blow during pressurization. This was all new back in the 1950s'. These disasters were the nail in the British commercial aviation coffin. The Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 passed them and we never looked back.
