Interesting to see that last one with the summertime candies for a time before air conditioning was a standard amenity! I would love to see all of what was in that box. The small candy maker (http://www.loweryscandies.com/Index/index.php) in my mom's family's hometown still closes for the summer sometime after Mother's Day. It's the only time of year I'm safe from my mother showing up with a 2 lb. box when she visits. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful, but she knows exactly what my favorites are, and it's difficult to stay away from a 2 lb. box of your favorite candies.
Edited to add: So from this ad and another I found (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1368&dat=19570725&id=AyoxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ahAEAAAAIBAJ&pg=1937,2322631), the list of "summertime candies" goes something like this: Fudge, chocolate caramel, bonbons, nougat, wafers, marshmallows, crisps, nuts. And Candy Professor has some insight about this (http://candyprofessor.com/2010/07/14/icy-hot-new-summer-candies-1920/).
That sounds better than the clay and waxes used in "hot climate" chocolates and the bars sent to troops overseas. Even our local vending machine on campus stops selling plain M&Ms (a sort of Smarties) and Twix and such during our hot summers because the case isn't AC and the chocolate is a mess. Yes, even the chocolate inside the candy shells of M&Ms.
