Might be clean, but it looks awfully cramped. Actually, I remember those old gas station restrooms often were. And you had to ask for a key. It wasn't until I was older that I realized it was probably to keep non-whites from sneaking in and using them.
Well, it could have been in some cases, but I have worked for places where you have to ask for a key( still pretty common where I am, not just gas stations, either!), and it has more to do with the fact that people DO vandalize bathrooms pretty horribly, as well as abusing drugs and occasionally committing murders in them than with racism.
Come to think of it, I have needed to ask for a key a few times to those "family bathrooms" like they have in some malls now. I have a son with special needs so those really come in handy, but good luck trying to find the custodian! In a high-crime area, locked bathrooms would make sense, too. I guess the reason I haven't seen them much recently is because if a place looks shady, I'm probably not going to stop there to begin with!
I can't imagine what sort of weird fantasy world this was where this actually existed? Women dressed like that really went into gas station bathrooms to powder their noses? Le sigh. How I wish I lived in that world.
