I apologize if this brings up painful sunburn memories (it sure does for me).  It also brings up Noxzema memories (tell me I'm not the only one who likes that smell!)  What they don't say is that Noxzema will saturate your bedding and make it smell forever, and spray-on "first aid" hurts like a mofo on sunburns.  Getting "Solarcained" was only slightly less painful than a smack on the back.

Noxzema, 1953

This one has its own unpleasant vibes and even more disturbing connections to The Simpsons...

noxema IS a good smell. but believe it or not, cold tea compresses (make the tea, let it cool, soak a washcloth in it) are better for sunburn pain, as are vinegar compresses (which are much stinkier!).

better yet, wear sunscreen and keep your silly self out of the sun when its at peak UV exposure times!

Oh yeah! That was my Moms cure for sunburn, Bactine & Noxzema. I still use both & LOVE the smell of Noxzema. I keep saying they should make a lotion.

I love Noxema! My uncle used to grow loofahs, and he'd send them to us by the bag full. Noxema and a fresh loofah was all I needed for skin care in my teens.

How do you grow loofahs?!

I knew they were gourds, but hadn't really thought about it. However, here's the results of a quick google search:

And if you're eager to give it a try:

They're a plant, very fibrous and rough, with seeds in them. My uncle would send them by the bag full, and we'd have to pick out the seeds and cut the loofahs to the size we want and so on. They're not naturally as smooth like you get when you buy a loofah scrubby pad from the store.

That is what happened I'm presuming if you were the wrong skin type, and sat in the sun using baby oil!

I had a sunburn like the one in the top picture once. My sister and I went out on my dad's boat for eight freaking hours and forgot to slather on / bring along any sunscreen. It was even worse after it blistered. My sister used Noxema, but it just stung too badly for me. I went through a lot of cool, damp towels and wash clothes for a week or two...

Now I NEVER forget sunscreen and hide from the sun like the pale, pale girl I am. But now I need to add Noxema to my shopping list for my daughter!

Ew! Unguentine! I hated the way that stuff smelled. My mom usually used the stuff in the tube for regular burns, not sunburn. For sunburn, my mom would douse me with Solarcaine. I didn't start using Noxema for sunburn until my teens and I like the smell of it. Still do, but not for sunburn.

Wow-- flashbacks to some pretty epic sunburns in my youth! The kind of excellent sunscreen we can get now didn't exist when some of us *cough* were growing up. As a redhead, I grew familiar with excruciating burns and the exquisitely screamy application of Noxema-- which did smell good, but didn't solve anything as far as I recall.

Since I'm an outdoor kitty I'm pretty well solid freckles now, and sun is no longer a problem.

I remember Unguentine...My mom used to use it on cuts as well as burns, which may be why I don't remember it being particularly painful to put on burns because it REALLLY hurt if you put it on other injuries. Particularly the time I fell down a disused well which happened to be heavily overgrown with stinging nettle that cushioned my fall at an agonizing price.

And yes, Noxema smells nice. Haven't seen it around for a long time, though I assume it's still sold. I also remember it tends to separate in the container and has to be stirred regularly to avoid looking disgusting.

Even though that lady is probably just wearing make up to make her appear sunburned, my skin still feels sympathy pains for her.
