A medley of digestible shortenings.
Jul. 12th, 2012 03:08 pmI have gone completely 'round the bend.
Here are six ads for six different shortenings, extolling in the ad copy the digestibility of the product.
Let's start with Crisco, which was digestible in 1933
:

Jewel shortening, digestible in the early 1940s:

Swift'ning (the digestibility came when they took out the "e") in 1954:

Aunt Jenny, of course, can't go for a minute without telling you how digestible Spry is:

Not to be outdone, Grandma will tell you that Dexo is digestible (1945):

I underlined it, because Grandma is more subtle than Aunt Jenny.
And finally, Fluffo. Yes, Fluffo is digestible. I even marked it TWICE in red. It's digestible, OK?

Now I'll go get help for my digestibility obsession.

Date: 2012-07-13 06:07 am (UTC)Crisco Biscuit shortcake
2 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup Crisco
1 egg
approx 2/3 cup milk or water
Sift dry ingredients. Cut crisco in finely with fork. Beat egg slightly in measuring cup, add liquid to fill 1/4 cup full. Add enough liquid (I assume it means add the eggy liquid to the dry ingredients?) to make soft dough. Pat into 2 rounds on lightly floured board. Put one round in greased pie plate, brush with melted Crisco, then lay on top rounds. Bake in hot oven (425 F) 20-25 minutes. Separate layers, spread crushed berries between and on top. Add whipped cream.
Caramel shortcake: Take 1/2 cup light brown suger, 3 tablespoons Crisco, 1/4 tablespoon salt. Cream together. Spread between layers of shortcake before baking. Do not separate layers. Heap strawberries on top.
Pie shortcake
2 cups flour
2 tbsp sugar
1/3 stp salt
1/2 cup Crisco
1/3- 1/2 cup water
Sift dry ingredients. Cut in Crisco finely. Add water, a little at a time, using only enough to hold the dry ingredients together. Divide into 3 parts. Roll each part into rounds, of graduated sizes, approximately 9, 8, and 7 inches big. Prick well with fork. Bake on cookie sheet in hot oven (425 F) 10-12 minutes. Cool. Spread 9 inch crust with whipped cream. Fill center with sweetened crushed berries. Put 8 inch crust on top. Repeat cream and strawberry filling. Top with 7 inch crust. Cover with whipped cream. Decorate top and exposed borders with whole berries.
All measurements level.
I'm going to take a break (a sleeping break) before attacking the Swift'ning one; a third of it is in italics. Also: it's only for pie crust, not the whole pie...
