We look down on canned apple filling nowadays, but it probably had it all over the alternative: Dried Apple Pies (http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/dried-apple-pies/). My grandpa used to tease Grandma with that poem whenever she made an apple pie...even though she would never dream of using dried apples.
I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right! Also: today's apple varietals are about twice as big as those in 1960. I could probably make a pie out of 4 or 5 modern apples (2 if they're Scarlet Beautys- look them up, they're amazing) whereas it would take ten or more mid-century apples. That's a lot of coring, peeling and slicing.
