It does seem like a great idea, doesn't it? A lot of people don't go to farmers markets because they're too out-of-the way or the hours don't work for them. I'm lucky to have a fruit and veg stand very close to me. There must be some reason why this isn't being done.

That was my first thought - why isn't someone doing this? If you can do a food truck, why not a food mini-grocer?

As far as that goes, why not a liquor store on wheels? Oh, yeah. Laws.

Hey, if people cared about laws prohibiting the mixing of alcohol and cars, NASCAR would have never been born.

The thing these days is you would probably do better having the trucks, not around the neighborhoods, but around businesses (maybe where the lunch trucks were earlier?) or around the schools, where you could do your shopping when you go to pick up your kids.

Yeah, you would use a lot of fuel driving around randomly. Where I live, some of the local BBQ restaurants have trucks that set up at certain places on certain days. Seems like the concept would work for produce. I just wish I had the business acumen and investment capital to try it! :)

I have read that in several big cities there are programs (mostly ad-hoc) to bring produce and such from farmer's markets into neighborhoods that are otherwise food deserts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_desert).

That would be a good service, especially if they can process accept SNAP.

I haven't heard anyone say "highball" in ages. My mom used to use that word. (Well, she was born in 1925, so I guess it makes sense.)

In the 60s to 70s, there WERE trucks that roamed my NYC neighborhood, on a set schedule, for knife sharpening, and one for fruits & veggies. That one was a display truck almost like the ad, just smaller. Back then, dairies and soda trucks made daily deliveries too. All gone. no more. so much for the so-called "service economy" :-(

I guess our modern equivalent would be online grocery shopping. I love being able to have my groceries delivered, but the only drawback is not being able to pick and choose the produce for yourself. This visiting truck would solve that problem! :-)

This would be perfect for so many neighborhoods that are food deserts, with no access to fresh food and people having to live on processed food from convenience stores and fast food. Someone really should look into grocery trucks.

the major problem i see is keeping the products on the shelves while driving around. it's easy for the semis delivering the food to the grocer, and for grocers delivering food to customers, because they don't care about presentation. for this, you'd either need to pack things up and set things out every time you changed locations, or you'd have to have some very specialized display stands that would keep the products secure.

don't get me wrong, i still wish this was possible.

I like this idea. And it's cool how everything looks modern and futuristic from the truck to the buildings in keeping with the theme. :)
