I always thought that in this version, the actress playing Lolita was a little oldish-looking for the part. This, only in terms of aligning with the book. It's far less creepy for an adult man to go after someone who looks 18 (even though the actress was 14 at the time) than someone who looks/is 12. Not that I approve of that, or anything, but you're *supposed* to be creeped out by it and you're supposed to be able to look at the relationship through that filter. The movie makes it hard to do that; it's so conventional that it's almost pointless.
I've never seen this version, but the Jeremy Irons/Dominique Swain version was exquisitely creepy. (Though I would have happily gone the rest of my life without seeing Frank Langella naked.)
