It must have been a disaster? Perhaps grease fires in the toaster if the package was ripped caused too many houses to burn down? Wouldn't it steam in the pack rather than fry and crisp-up?

Neil Steinberg's book "Failure" mentions Reddi-Bacon. In addition to being too bizarre, fat dripped into the toaster, ruining it.
