On the way though, the magical Fiero broke down and they had to catch a plane to Pinehurst, North Carolina.



Finding that everything in town was closed, they stopped at a hotel where the diminutive bell boy told them, "Ah, yes, the perfumed woman -- I've seen her around here, playing tennis on the six courts, trap shooting, and practicing on the pistol range."

So at first I thought that meant no alcohol, but a bit of googling reveals that they were the only resort in America that banned people with TB -- something which they proudly advertised.

TB was highly contagious -- if you were a different sort of invalid with a compromised immune system, it might be important to protect yourself from exposure.

Still pretty harsh the way they say it, of course.
