It took a few years for the Japanese to up their game with innovative technology and production methods, bringing their cars up to "just about as crappy as Detroit's" and eventually to "better than Detroit's." US carmakers were crap at innovation, while the Japanese prioritized it.
Modern cars are just light years ahead of 50s cars in terms of reliability and durability (and also safety), there's really no comparison.
