I found a necklace very similar to that middle pink one with the mixed bead styles in my aunt's discards from the period. The plastic pearls looked soooo cheesy. But when I took the beads off and sorted them out, the non-pearls turned out to be beautiful vintage Murano glass. It was so weird to have that mix of quality and trash. But apparently she was in fashion! I did keep another multistrand one where the strands of graduated "pearls" are different vivid shades of magenta and purple. They look almost like Christmas ornaments, so it's a holiday favorite for me.
Some of them certainly hold up better than others. The crummy ones are just dull white plastic inside, with a layer of pearly color on the surface. If they get scratched or nicked, the pearly color starts to peel off and show the white inside. Better ones have the same color and finish all the way through, so minor damage doesn't ruin them.

Date: 2012-06-02 08:25 am (UTC)It looks like they put a bunch of faux pearl necklaces on Carmen Miranda's hat. Oh well, it's still cute. :)
