Looks like the French "Extrême-Orient" was roughly equivalent to the English idea of the "Far East," i.e. Asia. Who knows what the just plain "Orient" meant to the French at that time - but didn't the Orient Express go to Istanbul? (i.e. Near East). Wikipedia goes on at such great length about the changing meaning of these different terms over time that you're bound to come out more confused than you started.
