That woman was evil to those poor children. And nothing was done, because she was Joan Crawford.
The movie is a little hard for me to watch--my mom is bi-polar and has borderline personality disorder, and had her moments like these. I suspect Joan Crawford did as well. It's still an interesting movie, though!
Oh, my mother hates Mommie Dearest. She says it reminds her of how out of control she felt during my parents' divorce. Which, well, my parents screamed at each other a lot (and this is the reason that to this day I cannot bear to watch political talk programs - the guests talking over each other makes me panicky), but she never did anything near like in the movie...closest she got was that there was one time she purposefully turned over a bucket of water at my dad while he was mopping...not realizing it had bleach in it.
