Wow, this appears to date back to when actual chocolate 'chips' were a new thing. Seems weird to contemplate a Toll House cookie recipe where you have to chop the chocolate.

I had no idea they were so old. Meaning, the recipe. I know people that bake them using vinegar.

From the 1930's I think! I was looking at variations which included adding a little milk adding Crisco or 3x the vanilla adding a little bit less sugar, etc.
