Ah. Lydia Pinkham...it was created decades before. When I moved to my present neighborhood about 20 years ago, the locla pharmacy still sold it! And a "tonic" called Bull's Blood, which contained a very high percentage of alcohol.

Speaking as someone who is *much* closer to menopause than menarche, I'm neither panicking nor tortured with fear. But maybe I should stock up on Lydia E. Pinkham Vegetabel Compound just in case? *eg*

Have the night sweats hit you yet? When you wake up having lost at least a gallon of water by drenching your sheets and blankets, you'll be RUNNING to get the stuff.

Ugh. I used to have to sleep on layers of beach towels, and keep extra pajamas by the bed to change into halfway through the night. I never even knew my body had that much water in it!

In the earlier days, they sold this for pretty much all "women's troubles" -- menopause, pms, infertility, etc. The company would encourage women to write to Lydia and she'd reply to their letters ... but they had a big scandal when they were still doing it and Ladies Home Journal published a photo of her gravestone, proving that she had been dead for 20 years.

The Betty Crocker people got around that, by golly.

She's also the subject of the Lily the Pink song.

"We'll drink a drink a drink
To lily the pink the pink the pink
The saviour of our human race
For she invented, medicinal compound
Most efficacious in every case"
