They couldn't spend a couple bucks on new socks?

Used to be that socks were more expensive.

Why not repair something, rather than throw it out and get new? I mend just about everything, including socks.

I tend to buy expensive socks (most of them are wool) and I knit socks as well, plus I like to wear wool technical clothing (which is both pricey and likes to get runs) and so I've become pretty good at darning things by hand. It's an old skill, and it's not difficult really, just tedious!

I do plan to learn to darn with a machine. I dunno if it's much faster (hand-darning only takes about ten minutes or so) but it would probably look nicer since I'd be able to use a finer thread. I'll probably still hand-darn things I've knit, though.

But there's no way to talk about darning without someone making a "darn it all" joke.

My mom has an Elna from the late 1960s that does those fancy stitches. It works like a jacquard loom, with interchangeable disks that guide the needle in different shapes. She has novelty disks to make stitching in the shape of ducks, sailboats, daisies, you name it. Here's a photo. (http://www.oocities.org/possumjim/adjusted_images/collect_sew_elna5.jpg)

At first, I thought that was the lady's toenail haha. I really like that green sewing machine.

I have a Singer 401 A that does all that shit AND it can sew with two needles at once. Scored it a thrift store for 30 bucks. Sounds great, does fancy stitches, has a SOUL, unlike my modern Janome. I, too, darn socks. Even cotton ones, if a little hole is the only thing wrong with them. Takes seconds, and buying new ones takes both time and money...
