My mother's first job was at a switchboard (albeit not for a phone company!)

Phone operators, like phone booths, seem to be slowly dying out these days.

I used to be a switchboard operator, and then a multiline receptionist. That was in the days before "Press one, for English" and voice prompts.

I LOVE her hair, it's so Grace Kelly. Wish I could get mine to do that.

My sister worked in Buffalo for New York Telephone as an operator in the late 1950s. I remember she had a split shift 8am - 11am and 3pm - 7pm. Lousy hours, it ruined the whole day.
