viewing the vintage ads for the past few months here has convinced me that there was a plot by MAD MEN (or even a bet over drinks, idk) that they could turn 12% of the population homosexual through subtle advertising.

It just looks like that through our eyes now. In the past twenty years we've been shown gay male characters in media and they are shown to be well groomed and well dressed. This is very recent. (And of course not accurate.)
But back in the '50s most men were expected to be well groomed and well dressed so this image wouldn't have been considered gay at all.
