Now that's what I call saving money. :D

Avisco (American Viscose) Fibers

Lord & Taylor catalogue, 1941

I love the ad, graphically, but the outfit less so.  "Talk of the campus" I'll bet.  "An absolute set-up for conversation" in a "gay stocking cap", "bulky" vest and "goofy" mittens - their words, not mine.

Soft-Weve toilet paper, 1956

From which one can also make gowns, it would seem.  One should not.

The first one makes me think of that Far Side comic in which a woman's husband gets eaten by a monster, but she survived because she was wearing a dress with the same pattern as her sofa and wallpaper.

Dress to match your own curtains! Sure, who wouldn't want that?

Why don't they make TP in lovely colors anymore? My mom always bought TP to match the bathroom colors.

After we decorated the bathrooms, we'd dress like the drapes and hide around the house....

Colored TP gives some ladies infections, as did the perfumed TP.

Just because Scarlett O'Hara could rock a dress made out of drapes doesn't mean the rest of us should try it.

Is that first one supposed to be one of those hidden object games?

How do you solve a problem like Maria given Avril rayon?

All of the ads are lovely, especially number three. It's impressive that the ad actually made a toliet paper dress look attractive. Although, I agree with you that no one should really make their own TP dress (except maybe for Halloween).

maybe it's the crudeness of the drawing, but i kind of think the second one is cute. perhaps i'm biased as i went to college where that would actually be useful.

One would be the talk of the campus in all that knitwear.
