When I scroll past this I keep thinking he's got a piece of her hair held up to make his mustache. I KNOW better, but I have to give it a second look.

As evangelizing goes, I like this (and the premise behind the Gideons). No pressure, just "hey, here's a book we like and think you might find it useful, if you do, maybe find some folks in your neighborhood to talk about it."

Besides, so much of western literary/cultural canon draws inspiration from the Bible that even if you're a non-believer, it's worth having a copy just for cultural literacy.

Keep Bible behind glass. Break glass in case of obscure religious allusion emergency.

If you disobey, God will turn you into a salt pillar.

Oh, it's Sonny and Cher. My first thought was that it was saying that reading the bible makes you grow a moustache, or something.

Cher was so beautiful before she made herself all plastic.

It's still balls that Sonny died when he did like he did.

They were so freaking cute.

Am I the only one who's old enough to remember that Sonny used to beat Cher? And that she's come out publicly and talked about this? Is a abuser like Sonny really the best example to be used for this?

Ex post facto. This ad was before his abuse was general public knowledge. He wasn't a very nice man, but he believed in supernatural redemption. I wonder why?

Just the words "supernatural redemption" make me shudder. And I can't help but see this ad as part of the beginning of the end of the USA, since the date is exactly when the whole "born-again", evangelical, fundamentalist, right-wing Christian movement began--the single most destructive element in American society today.

except that, you know, what you're talking about is dubbed the 4th great awakening because there were three of them before.

and i don't agree with them about many things, but i might vote "the illegal drug trade," or "gang wars," or maybe "the kardashians" a little ahead of bible thumpers. but you've obviously had some bad experiences.

Except that none of the above have highjacked an entire political party and changed the very face of political discourse. I'd say that they've had a considerably greater impact on American society as a whole than any of the things you've mentioned. You can't seriously believe that the Kardashians are a greater threat to American society than right-wing fundamentalists.

The illegal drug trade can be eliminated by a single act: legalising drugs and taxing them like any other merchandise. Gang wars are a bit more problematical of course, but are often related to the illegal drug trade. As for the Kardashians, better use of birth control would have eliminated that problem--but then the bible-thumpers controlling the Republican party would like to see birth control eliminated entirely.

BTW, I haven't had any "bad experiences" personally with bible thumpers, but just seeing what they've done to political discourse--and especially the war they've launched on women's rights lately, particularly reproductive rights--is enough to make me very, very angry. I remember the battle we women fought for those very rights--I lived through it. One doesn't have to have had "bad experiences" personally with the members of a movement to disagree with it. I'm sure there were plenty of nice members of the Nazi party in German society between 1933 - 1945, but that didn't change the party's basic doctrine or the murderous actions it took based on that doctrine.

Finally, I'm aware of the "great awakenings" but I'd hardly call any of them that, especially since all four are essentially the result of terror "awakened" by social change and constitute a reactionary response to that very change. Societies are not static and are subject to change at all times. That fundamentalists of all religions cannot seem to grasp this basic fact of life demonstrates the very weakness of all fundamentalist doctrines; and that weakness is why they will all ultimately fail.

But enough already--this is vintage ads, not ONTD Political.

No you're not the only one, I was looking at it going "uhh" then I realized it was dated before she came out about it, Honestly i have to wonder if her cosmetic surgery was partly because of Sonny's abuse.

Huh. I'm actually old enough to remember watching Sonny and Cher's television show. I don't know that I knew he abused her. I probably did; it just didn't stick in my long term memory.

I did enjoy their variety show when I was a kid, though.
