Dual rear brakes? Huh?

No shit! Front brakes are always more effective on a bike. It's just physics.

Yup, once did a hill on a bike that had rear breaks, to this day I'm afraid of speed because "pushing the pedals backwards" to stop did nothing!

You're referring to coaster brakes, which were dangerous as hell. Not at all what's pictured in the ad.

Don't know anything about bikes, but thanks for letting me know those types of breaks are dangerous. Probably should have had a more advanced bike if I was going to be doing things like that!

It's not so much the back brakes -- I had coaster brakes when I was a kid -- but the "dual" part. As far as I can see, it is two identical caliper brakes mounted one next to the other. How does that improve effectiveness? The physics of that tiny front wheel are already a mess. Looks bad-ass though. I know my brother would have loved this if he'd seen one.

"Laying scratch" by locking up the rear wheel was major part of the rod bike culture.

Puts me in mind of the Raleigh Chopper :)

I thought it was a chopper at first. I'm not too sure about those butterfly handlebars though?

Remember when Sears used to be the place to buy...everything?

Yes.

I have the 1982 Christmas Wishes catalog to prove it.

I need to scan that someday...

Ah, the Sears Wish Book. Good times. No Target, Wal-Mart or anything else to distract from the wonders of Sears. We'd spend hours with that book, making our Christmas lists.

Now that I think about it, must have sucked to be a mailcarrier on that day.

And my parents pretty much did! My mother was disabled so shopping was difficult for her and it was before the Internet so catalogs were the way to go. Pretty much my entire wardrobe came from there until I was old enough to shop on my own.

The Lemon Frog Shop?

Yep! I remember that. I know I had a few items from that line. I also remember when I was about 12 and had to begin ordering clothes in "Pretty Plus" sizes. Did they think they were fooling anyone? Every fat girl like me knew that was a euphemism for fat.

I remember these bikes, but this is the first time I have really looked at them from a mom's perspective. Those gear shifts scare me!
