and the monkey has to do with what? is she "ethyl" (i've seen other ethyl ads and don't remember a monkey mascot) or are monkeys just supposed to be bad-joke-enhancing?
This went one of two ways. Either people in 1936/37 were as confused as we are and this ad was a complete fail or they were rolling on the floor laughing and shouting whatever the mid-30s equivalent of "oh, no, they didn't!" was. The chimp seems appropriate here because there's definitely a missing link. Whatever cultural elements that might have made this ad work at the time are long gone now.
I remember seeing this ad in a bound volume of LIFE magazines. Like it was on the back of the first issue or something. And here it is again. Hello, Ethyl.
