I would love to see some of the toys and novelties that were handed out in the boxes back then. I bet they were certainly better than the sorry excuses you find in today's packages.
They love crackerjacks. Granola bars tend to be a hit, too. One of the horses that used to be at the barn I work at would lift his head up and do a happy lil lip curl for some of the old Quaker chewy granola bars. Another odd treat most of 'em really like is plain ol dry uncooked pasta.
Dry pasta! I never would have thought of trying that. But yes, Cracker Jack, granola bars, Nilla wafers, frosted brown-sugar-and-cinnamon Pop Tarts -- those are all high on Prince's hit list.
I gave him cotton candy once... he seemed to like it , but every time he took a bite he looked like he was wondering where it had gone. ;-)
I was surprised the first time I saw someone giving 'em dry pasta, but they really do seem to like it.
I had friends whose clydesdale went bonkers for grape popsicles. Another acquaintance once told me he sometimes would pick up some dinner mints that kind of dissolved as soon as you put them in your mouth. He'd give 'em to his mules who would take them, then go nosing around the ground, thinking they'd dropped it since it was no longer in their mouth.
and, just because i had to squint my way through the text in the white box to make sure there weren't any other double-entendres, here it is for the rest of you to enjoy:
Crisp kernels of popcorn, big meaty peanuts all covered with delicious molasses candy - that's Cracker Jack. Always fresh in the famous wax-sealed package. Your neighborhood dealer who sells candy will appreciate your Cracker Jack patronage.
