I wonder how many times guys said, "What? I'm just trying to read your headlines."
I knew that newspapers became narrower at some point, but I never really knew when or why it happened. I never thought of it as it a solution to a mass transit issue.
My Grandma told me that when she was a kid during the Depression you could always tell the families that were really struggling if the kids were running around in clothes made from potato sacks or even newspapers. Looks like someone did a ironic take on that.
They also used to sell flour in 25-lb. muslin sack that people would make into pillow cases. Somewhere I have some that my grandmother embroidered. Probably some were converted into items of clothing.
Paper dresses were popular in 1967, and unless I'm mistaken, that's when this ad campaign ran. The Sun-Times had several campaigns where they stressed the convenience of the tabloid format as opposed to the broadsheet like the Tribune and the American. Later, the Tribune bought the American from Hearst and renamed it "Chicago Today," and published it as a tabloid to compete for the morning market, but eventually they shut it down and moved many of the features to the Tribune. (I grew up in Chicago when all of this was happening.)
