The illustration of that battery makes it look like it only has three cells instead of the standard six for a car battery. Did cars run on 6 volt systems in the old days?

Oh yes, for quite some time apparently. When we were dating, my ex-husband drove a 52 Plymouth with a 6 volt battery. It was interesting the first time we had to jump it off my 12 volt. He told me non-nonchalantly to only hold the clamps on the battery, not actually clamp them. This was so that when they started glowing red, I could pull them off before they melted.
Wow. You were probably lucky the 6V battery didn't have an open cell!
If it had, you probably would have burned out pretty much everything in the car, since the battery wouldn't regulate the voltage. Of course in a 1952 car there was likely not much to burn out beyond a few light bulbs. :)

I think '67 was the first year for 12 V VWs.
