What the hell is this even supposed to mean?

The children in the ad are setting an example of friendship by sharing the milkshake. The quote from the Bible states that a child will lead (implication being that they will lead the way to inter-racial friendship and brotherhood). The last line encourages the (assumedly adult) reader to take the cue and instead of waiting for children to lead the way in inter-racial friendship, to begin the process themselves.

Which all is very nice, and has exactly nothing to do with advertising Greyhound.

It presents Greyhound as a pro-civil rights company. I'm pretty sure someone may have read that ad, noticed that it was for Greyhound, and next time they could take a bus somewhere, chose Greyhound because they liked the views espoused in the ad.

Not everything has to be as blatant as "Ride Greyhound! We're awesome!"...even though, that's exactly what this ad is, just subtler.

Look, you saved money by taking the bus, so buy each kid have his own damn milkshake. Backwash. Eww! I'm not a racist; I'm a germophobe.

That ad made me smile. In 1980 I'm sure there were plenty of people who wouldn't want to be stuck on a long bus ride and have to sit next to a black person. I think the ad is saying that everyone gets treated equally on that bus line.

I get the reason for the ad. The two kids are both cute, but they look like the director is wielding a hatchet.

Joe Black has an interesting history. He was a baseball profi and the first black pitcher to win a World Series game (if I can believe Wikipedia):

Cool. Love this description of him:
He was a great guy, a jolly guy, a real fun guy.

Thx for the link, you learn a little something every day.

The kid on the right looks like Rodney Allen Rippy:
