Oh the irony: "Its name was formed from the atomic elements which make up pure water: hydrogen and oxygen.  The similar Oreo—introduced later, in 1912—was inspired by the Hydrox, yet Hydrox suffered from the impression of being a knockoff. Compared to the Oreo, the Hydrox had a "tangy, less-sweet filling" and a crunchier cookie that stood up better in milk." (Wikipedia)

But let's let the cookie itself tell the story...

The Loose-Wiles Thousand-Window Bakery is a whole other story, and a fascinating one.

Nummmy......We always ate Hydrox as a kid. Not those potentially-lard-laden and thus unkosher Oreos.

Thanks for the article!
I knew they became kosher at some point, but wasn't sure when.

I've always preferred Hydrox to Oreos, but I haven't seen Hydrox in YEARS! :(

LOL I saw that too! Does it count as a Jell-O ad for the contest??? Because if it is, I say YES!

I had no idea that Hydrox was the original and Oreo was the copycat. WOW. So I learned something today...

I've never had Hydrox cookies, largely because you can't get them in the UK. Do they taste very different to Oreos (which i think are revolting)?

When we were doing our WWII rationing experiment, I got some Hydrox and we had a Hydrox/Oreo taste test.

They're pretty much identical. Hydrox's cookie is a bit heavier, not as light and crisp as an Oreo.

I always thought Hydrox was the knock off Oo. Thanks for teaching me some history. =)

I agree that I think the name held them back, but to me it always had sort of a chemical ring to it, which apparently that was the idea, but I tend to associate hydroxides with harsh chemicals, not pure water. And, yeah, I was a pretty nerdy kid for thinking that to begin with! I'd still eat them though if that's what we had in the house.

Exactly. A very unappetising name. I wonder what the origin was? I can't help thinking sodium hydroxide. (lye).
