When I was young I remember the Christmas cake idea being new from Jello and my mom made it. We thought it tasted quite nice. Twenty two years later in 2000, I remembe the Ruby Slipper cake served for dessert when invited to someone's house for dinner. The hostess liked it because her name happened to be Ruby! My family enjoyed the cake, and Ruby kindly shared the recipe before we went home. I made it a few times. So yes, they are perfectly edible, tasty cakes.

Yes to the ad and yes to the question. This is an appropriate use for Jello. I can remember the last time I had this. It's one of those recipes that was popular for awhile then went out of fashion. Really easy to make, too, if I remember right. Seems like I recall they suggested using a chopstick or something like that to perforate the cake. I would think a fork would tear it up too much.

i use a meat fork (like a serving fork) to do the jello cake, and the end of a wooden spoon to do perforate when i do a pudding cake.

pudding cakes are done JUST like the jello cakes, but you spread the pudding over while its still a bit runny. good stuff either way. :)

YES on the ad!

Yep, my mom used to make them for my birthday with cherry and lime jello. When I make them, I use the end of a wooden spoon to make the holes. Works great and they are super moist.

Poke cakes! So good. My grandmother made them sometimes when I was little. Since I never got to actually see her make them, I thought she was magic - being able to make them all multicolored and stuff. LOL

They do taste good, and I've had them, but I admit that it used to annoy me after I went vegetarian--it turned a perfectly vegetarian food (cake) into a non-vegetarian food.

Now I'm vegan, so most cakes are out for me anyway. Thankfully cupcakes are easy to make vegan and delicious, and I live in a town with vegan bakeries.

I bet you could make one with agar jelly, and there are enough vegan cupcake/cake recipes out there. Not impossible!

Oh, I'm sure it's possible, but I didn't love jello cakes enough to bother figuring it out!

I did try to make vegan jello shots once though. They needed way more agar, they were gooey. They were still super-fun to eat though, because they became the source of a lot of silliness, since licking the goo from the little plastic tubs was really suggestive.

I always requested poke cakes for my birthday when I was a kid. Lemon or raspberry.

Poke cakes are awesomesauce, and now I'm totally craving one. Shall have to make do with Girl Scout cookies (Savannah Smiles FTW!).

I like the Jell-O cakes, but I always thought the pudding cakes were too soggy and clammy-textured. Better to put the pudding into the cake.

Actual nostalgia. This is the first ad that has actually made me wish I had a packet of Jell-O because I could really go for a slice of 'poke cake'.
