Googlemaps says there's an East Harry Street that crosses South Hillside, so apparently an intersection. Looks like the building at the address is now a mattress shop.
Hillside is a north-south street, and the nearest east-west street is called Harry. I used to work in a great Italian restaurant less than half a block from that spot. I'd be interested to know the date of this advertisement. My dad also grew up in Wichita, and I'm almost positive that he told me once that the building you see if you Google this address (the mattress shop) used to be a bowling alley when he was a kid in the 50's and 60's. The buildings don't look similar so this skating rink must have been torn down.
This address is in a part of town that used to have numerous neat attractions: theaters, bowling alleys, diners, department stores, boutiques, skating rinks, and so on. Both the drive-in theater where I saw "Star Wars" and the regular theater where I saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" were both only a few blocks away. There was an amusement park called "Kiddie Land" nearby that was torn down to build Wichita's first mall. Only about a mile south of here still stands what is left of Joyland amusement park, which you can read a sad story about here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1384747/New-images-reveal-derelict-Joyland-amusement-park-heart-America.html
That part of town is pretty run-down these days. About the most interesting thing in that area now is a plethora of fast-food restaurants.
That is depressing. I live about 15 miles from the former Heritage USA and it was in serious decay. The Charlotte Observer did a story on it a few years ago before a megachurch bought the land and is trying to do something with it, but an amusement park is not part of the plan. Of course, Heritage USA went down for different reasons, but the images of decay are still really sad and creepy.
Thanks for the info about Harry St. Makes since now.
