When Bus travel seemed more pleasant.

1947 ... buses jam highways!

1931 ... headed for calm!
... let's go to 'Meenie'!
... around the world on Greyhound!
1937 ... hooked a live one!
1945 ... new happiness!
1945 ... wife and kid!
1951 ... thru-liners!
1943 ... future buses!

I dont mind taking a bus, personally.

It's the future! We'll have robot bus drivers! I'm surprised there's no mention of taking a bus to the moon ... they really thought the moon was gonna be a much bigger deal than it turned out to be.

Nothing beats a train. Bus seats are so small.

Ha, my brother took Greyhound home a few months ago and the bus left 20 minutes before the ticket time without making any announcements. Then at his changeover in NYC there was just a giant room crammed with people who had missed their buses due to that issue trying to get on the next bus, with no sort of priority system ensuring that they'd get on that one either. Also, there were no signs anywhere and the only reason my brother found his bus was because a homeless guy showed him where it was. Doesn't exactly seem like the Greyhound in these ads anymore.

The funny thing is, at least on the 'express' buses, they've recently become much more organized about the whole thing -- they have boarding zones and are very strict about who gets on and in what order. A year or two ago, it was practically the wild west - people would just show up whenever, didn't matter what time or date was on the ticket, first in line got on the bus and if there wasn't room for everyone in line, oh well, there'll be another bus later. I travel a lot more now, and really prefer amtrak when they aren't over-the-top gougey with their prices.

The NYC to Boston route (or any of the northeast corridor routes) seems to be a perpetual clusterfuck. All of my friends and I have had poor to horrendous experiences with it. The PABT might be a portal into hell.

My experiences on Greyhounds to Montreal/Ottawa and Toronto on the other hand have been uneventful and reasonably pleasant. The worst thing was a trip to Toronto where I had a brutal migraine and yarfed on the bus, but the driver was exceedingly pleasant and professional about it, pulled into the very next rest area so I could pick up some excedrin and sit for a bit, and moved my stuff to a forward seat for me. I might take Amtrak if it were possible/feasible/didn't cost an arm and a leg, but Greyhound isn't bad, depending on the route.

I've taken the bus and it was okay, but I much prefer the train!

Oooh...that makes more sense then the theory I had that Michigan had some crazy scheme in the 1940s to take over the country. (your powers are useless against are team of angry buses, boowahahaha...)

I'm pretty sure they still send military dudes back home on Greyhounds. or at least, when my husband had to leave basic because of a medical issue, they sent him home on a greyhound

that got stranded. in philly. in a blizzard. good times.

When my mother was growing up in the '30's-'50's they lived in a semi-rural area just off a major highway so it was always easy to walk a couple doors down and catch a bus to the nearest city (about 40 miles away) to go shopping or to the movies or whatever. Everything they could want was downtown back then so they could get right off the bus, have a day in the city, and then take the bus back home and get off practically at their doorstep! This was far from a major metropolitan area too, just the rural South!
