Space: the final frontier.

In color!

"Ably assisted"? (Team Spock, here. Boston represent!)

Can you spot the discrepancy here?

Will never not be creepy...

One of my favorite parts of this series is its cultural diversity. I recognize that [livejournal.com profile] pikkewyntjie posted the Ebony cover with Nichelle Nichols a couple months ago, but I really wish I could have gotten to it first!

A most fascinating source.

Despite not being given a lot to do, Uhura could still be incredibly bad-ass when necessary. For the '60s, showing a woman capable of handling herself on the bridge of the Mirror Enterprise was pretty cool. :)

The old ads never fail to amuse! Grace Lee Whitney is prominent in the early episodes but pretty much disappears halfway through the first season. And I noticed they had to make sure to point out 'Earthman' in one of the ads. ;)

Interesting, too, that an hour-long show started on the half hour, at 8:30. But then, before the family hour was mandated, primetime series could start at 7 or 7:30.

I know we had this discussion when I posted the Ebony cover, but it's worth nothing that Nichelle Nichols was considering leaving Star Trek because she did not think they were giving her character enough to do. That is, until none other than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. himself personally asked her to stay on the show. So glad she stayed on because her character really developed over the years and everyone in the Federation knew not to f*** with Uhura!

I've always loved that story! :) Dr. King understood that even though Nichelle wasn't one of the stars that her presence on the bridge as Chief of Communications was important. Not only did she get to be very cool and dangerous in the Mirror, Mirror episode, but she was shown doing technical work on her console and Spock complimenting her on her abilities! LOL!

Any woman who could be kick-ass in a mini-skirty and thigh-high boots is tops in my book! ;)

Well, Dr. King was certainly right. Whoopi Goldberg and astronaut Mae Jamison are just two examples of African-American girls who were inspired by Uhura. Inspiring a young girl to pursue a career in science and go into space? Now that kicks ass! Uhura is an inspiration to girls of all races. You can be super smart, have a great career, and, if you want, look damn fine while doing it!

This was also a major source of argument between Roddenberry and the network executives. I have Nichelle Nichols' autobiography and she talks about her relationship with Gene and how he kept trying to fight for her to get more and more screen time and kept getting shut down.

Wonderful post. All excellent finds.

Spooky Spocky? WTF?

(Team Spock here too. But my mother was 100% "Team I don't even like science fiction but William Shatner is hot so pass the popcorn, kid.")

My mother is the same way. Not much of a science fiction fan, but she watched Trek and the original movies all because of Shatner. The original VHS release of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home came with a double sided poster featuring Shatner in two scenes from the movie (one was on Enterprise, the other was with Catherine Hicks in the hospital scene). After my parents got divorced, my mother put that poster up by our TV and kept it there for years...well into the 90's.

For the record, she is now 60 years old and still squeals when she sees a Priceline.com commercial.

There's a local theater group (I'm in Portland, Oregon) that does Trek in the Park. Every summer they pick an episode and do it as a staged play for a bunch of weekends in a row. They even have live musicians play the opening credits music (and incidental soundtrack stuff), with a lovely soprano singer.

It's absolutely amazing. They've done it for (I think) three years now. They've had to move to a park with more places to sit!

The discrepancy seems to be the date? The year specifically. From 79 shouldn't it go to 80 rather than 75? I surprised they hadn't decimalised the calendar by then. 12 months with a random number of days seems so inefficient.

Sorry...it was a 4!!! So that's not it. As there's no up or down in space it can't be the angle of the Enterprise.... I can't see it?!

From: [identity profile] hushdawg.livejournal.com
I'd read that initially the Enterprise "saucer" was supposed to be on the "bottom" and that the bridge was to be positioned behind the deflector array. So the image could be from a pre-release before Roddenberry changed his mind about the ship orientation.

Beatle bangs? Someone please enlighten me and tell me to which member of the Beatles they were referring because I think I missed their Spock hair phase.

Their hair was iconic! Like this (http://images.apple.com/the-beatles/images/hero_220101116.jpg), or this (http://www.kctunes.com/Bios/Images/Beatles3.jpg), for example. It was just that kind of low, rounded-cut 'do they sported, particularly during their earlier pop years.

In fact...

Exactly what I was thinking. Yeah, Beatles hair was very popular, but I still don't see how someone would look at Spock and think "oh, he has hair like The Beatles." The copywriter just seemed to be grasping at a lot of cultural clichés trying to sound hip and relevant.

ETA: Now with Chekov, on the other hand, yeah, he definitely had that kind of hairstyle, but he came along later.

I think in those days the very idea of a man having hair that was combed forward with a fringe was outrageous, and the only people in pop culture who had hair worn that way were the Beatles, as I recall. You look at any photo of men in the 50s, early 60s and the hair was uniformly combed back from the face.

Chekov most certainly had proper young-person Beatle hair.

From: [identity profile] pikkewyntjie.livejournal.com
Good point, suzycat! I had not thought of it that way. Sort of like calling any man with long hair a "hippie." (Heck, I still know people who do that!)

Date: 2012-02-25 02:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mbif.livejournal.com
Yeah. It was just the "in" thing at the time, so people tried to apply it to everything that would even loosely fit the definition to try and make it a little hipper/trendier-seeming.

Trust a Vulcan to try and perfect a haircut! Shaggy and relaxed is not nearly as precise or logical as a clean-cut trim.

I believe that was the original, intended orientation of the Enterprise, but then they decided they liked it the other way.

Even before the slash was invented, the slash is evident in these ads. Or are my slash-goggles just really finely tuned?

Well, Kirk and Spock are the granddaddies of modern slash.

Exactly, it seems prescient. Since the show has only just begun.
