I learned to type on a manual typewriter in high-school in the early 70s, in an all female class of course. We were solemnly warned by our teacher that if we became secretaries, and our office switched from manual to electric typewriters, we must be even more vigilant about our weight, because "studies showed" that switch alone could cause a woman to gain 5 pounds in a years time. (And the unspoken message we all understood was that gaining weight could have severe negative impact on your career as a secretary.)
