It's actually just a giant crib/playpen, not unlike Graco's portable Pack-n-Play cribs today. It was made of wood with metal mesh on the sides, and the cover shown was just a loose netting to keep out bugs. It was incredibly sturdy: my parents had one, and all five of their children plus their eldest grandchild used it for a period spanning 20 years. They even took it on camping trips. In fact, I slept and played in this portable crib on my very first camping trip at the age of six months, and I just turned 54. :-)
All the kids in my family went from the bassinet at birth to a now-300-year-old cradle and then to this portable crib, which made a great baby bed until the age of two or three.
we're about to have the third generation go into a...well, its in between sized of a bassinet and a crib. i know its EASY because the mattress is just the size of a pillowcase. that makes changing sheets in the middle of the night easy!
Between a bassinet and a crib for our family was a cradle--you could probably call what you're referring to as a cradle, too, especially based on the size of the mattress!
I was thinking the same thing. My kids wore out 2 of those Pack-n-Plays so it sure didn't last 20 years.
This thing must have been considered revolutionary in 1916. Because mosquito-borne diseases were still a big problem then, I would feel much better having my kid screened in.
I'll say one thing, though--the Pack-n-Plays are a heck of a lot lighter to carry than this thing was! Still, it folded flat just like them.
I had no idea it went as far back as 1916 until I saw this ad. It must have been popular for some time, since my oldest brother was born in 1948, so my parents must have purchased some time after that, perhaps when my oldest sister was born in 1950.
One of these was donated to me. I am curious as to its value. I is not painted, and is in great condition. Email me @ robhump68@yahoo.com with any information. Thank you Rob Humphrey
