Ironically enough, not as odd as you might think. Pink shirts and ties for men weren't all that uncommon.
I think it's like a psychological outlet for a culture so determined to shoehorn people into rigid gender roles. Also, it could have been mild rebellion of a generation who had to serve in the military with the draft and going pink after years of olive drab. :)
